Rarely has so short a book, 165 pages/ 3 audio discs, affected me so much. Sebastian Junger’s Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging, is a fascinating look at how tribal societies functioned in the past as well as today. In it he posits how in today’s developed societies, this sense of belonging and value to society are limited or totally missing. He covers veterans, those suffering from PTSD, and others. His definition of PTSD and its relationship to various types of trauma is thought-provoking. Lastly, his critique of modern society, where it is potentially heading, and how we must be alert to necessary changes in order to avoid a societal collapse, is riveting. I read it twice just to lock in much of his thinking and have been sharing ti with friends and family. Take the time to read this.
