A murder, a theft, and a city on high alert come together to form a well crafted mystery in “Steeplejack,” the first in a new series of novels by bestselling author A.J. Hartley.
Bar-Sahlem is a city divided by racial tensions. Anglet Sutonga is a low class steeplejack who comes to work one day to find her new apprentice lying dead on the pavement and the city’s invaluable icon, “the Beacon,” missing. Ang is determined to solve the mystery of her apprentice’s death, and quickly finds herself thrust into the middle of the investigation into the city’s missing Beacon. Always seemingly in the wrong place at the wrong time, Ang encounters a range of unscrupulous characters as she struggles to piece together the clues behind the disappearance before the city descends into anarchy.
Cleverly touching on a number of timely topics, “Steeplejack” is a solid mystery that keeps you guessing until the end. Though a little simpler for older readers, “Steeplejack” is an excellent read for the young adult mystery reader, or someone well in tune with many of today’s major hot button topics.
