The Trouble with Goats and Sheep by Joanna Cannon

trouble with goats and sheepI can truthfully say I have read my favorite book of 2017, The Trouble with Goats and Sheep. This novel (by the way, first novel by the author) has it all! It is clever, charming, disturbing, funny, and full of mystery throughout.

The quick overview – this book is about two 10-year-old girls in 1976, Grace and Tilly, who are determined to find out what happened to their neighbor, Mrs. Creasy. They decide since they have been taught that Jesus knows all, they need to find him. So in their minds, the logical place to start is their own neighborhood. But of course, we the readers know that they are actually finding out a bit more than they should.

The novel goes back and forth between 1976 and 1967, when a tragedy occurred in this neighborhood. A tragedy that the neighbors do not want to think or hear about again!

This novel cannot be categorized. Is it a coming-of-age story? A suspense novel? Historical fiction?

You decide.
