Today Crazy Rich Asians is out in theaters!
The movie is based on the book Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan, which was first published in 2013. Crazy Rich Asians is the first in the series, followed by China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems.
Starting off the series, Crazy Rich Asians highlights three super-rich and important Chinese families who now (mostly) live in Singapore. When American-born Chinese, Rachel Chu agreed to go to Singapore with her boyfriend Nicholas Young, she pictured exploring the island, spending time with Nicholas and seeing his family home. However, she didn’t know that Nicholas’ family is one of the wealthiest in the country and that his house is a fortress. Rachel also didn’t know that Nicholas is one of the most sought after bachelors on the island, due to his good looks and wealth he will one day have as the heir to the Young fortune. Soon, Rachel is tossed into an intense (and rich) world of gossip, backstabbing, and mischievous planning. However, Rachel’s biggest opponent yet will be Nick’s mother, who has strong feelings about who Nick should be marrying.
Crazy Rich Asians also has a colorful cast of side characters and families that are rich, hilarious and decadent. At first, I wasn’t sure if I would like this book, but I quickly got sucked in to the world and drama of the Asian JetSet and their families.
I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I plan to this week. From the trailers the movie looks just as decadent and bonkers as the book, so I can’t wait to see it. I already have the next two books on hold for my kindle on Overdrive/Libby!
