The Library of the Unwritten is the first book in the Hell’s Library series. Claire is the head librarian of the Unwritten Wing which is located in a neutral part of Hell where all the books that were never finished are held. The library operates like many other libraries and her main job duty is keeping the books organized. The main difference is that the books cannot be checked out and all of the library patrons are demons. Since the books are made of pure potential, they must be protected from outside forces as well as forces from within. Since characters from the books can come to life and wreak havoc on the library, one of Claire’s essential jobs is putting them back in their books.
When a hero from one of the novels escapes, she must return to earth to track him down and bring him back. With the help of Brevity, a former muse, and Leto, a brand new demon, Claire starts a journey throughout the realms that may change the library forever.
This book is a great start to the series. Hackwith does a fantastic job world building by connecting various afterlifes from mythology into a captivating new story. The perspectives change from chapter to chapter so the reader is able to learn more about these fascinating characters. This is a great book for those who love fantasy, libraries, and mythology.
